Bauxite Mines

An important limestone deposit reminiscent of Wild West atmospheres, discovered in 1935 and active between the 1950s and 1980s for the extraction of minerals from which aluminum was obtained.

But what is the reason for the color of the Bauxite Mines? Alta Murgia limestones have a soluble part called calcium carbonate and an insoluble part composed of iron and aluminum oxides with a typical red color. These materials dye the karst soil of the Murgia, concentrating particularly in the red earth deposits of the Mines.

The site has been redeveloped with interventions aimed at conservation and recovery of habitats and wildlife species.
