More than 700 meters in diameter and 90 meters deep, it is among the largest and most scenic karst sinkholes in Italy. The Pulo di Altamura is among the most important geological sites in the Alta Murgia, generated by a cave collapse and shaped by the force of rainwater. It is an exceptional expression of epigeal karst, which is characterized by the presence of caves along the steep walls and at the bottom. Archaeological evidence found in the caves shows human presence between the Upper Paleolithic to the Middle Ages.
The site is located in the “A zone” of the protected area (integral reserve zone) and is home to important endemic species, thanks to a favourable microclimate even in the driest periods. Due to its great geological value, it was used as an example of karstification by the illustrious Apulian geologist Carmelo Colamonico.
