A very ancient site dedicated to the worship of St. Michael the Archangel. An evocative natural cavity of karst origin, where faith and mystery blend beautifully in the rock.
The cave-church of St. Michael dates back two million years. It is a cavity 60 meters long, approximately 12 meters wide and 20 meters deep. As the karst system has evolved, it has undergone collapse phenomena that have resulted in the irregular shape of the walls.
Ninety steep steps lead to the center where the altar of St. Michael and a tombstone testifying to his cult are located. Archaeological evidence dating back to the 4th-3rd century B.C. and pottery fragments show the site’s frequentation since prehistoric times.
