GeoEvents
Enhancing the geodiversity of the Aspiring Geopark “Murgeopark”

The public call “GeoEventi” is an initiative to enhance the geological heritage of the territory of Alta Murgia and Premurge, in the path of candidacy as a UNESCO Global Geopark. Its main objective is to promote the geodiversity of the territory, a rare heritage that includes karst forms of great scientific, aesthetic and educational interest, such as the surface with dinosaur footprints of Altamura, the Pulo and Pulicchio sinkholes, and the numerous caves, “lamas” (wide furrow in the ground typical of the Murge landscape) and sinkholes that dot the region.

The first edition of the call actively involved administrations and associations of the fifteen municipalities of the Aspiring Global Geopark, inviting them to submit proposals to design, promote and organize events aimed at discovering and enhancing the geological, naturalistic and historical-cultural heritage of the area. The proposed initiatives included itineraries, workshops, cultural and artistic events, promotion of typical products in relation to geodiversity, and more.

Among the many proposals accepted are projects such as “Star’s Walks,” which enhances the geo-environmental and astronomical peculiarities of the Park, and “Murgeopark for all,” an inclusive initiative with immersive workshops for people with disabilities. In total, 43 initiatives were admitted out of 51 proposals received, demonstrating the broad participation and great diligence of local communities.

Selected proposals are distinguished by their ability to create collaborative networks among organizations, associations and schools, the inclusion of experts such as geologists and naturalists, the accessibility of events to people with disabilities, and attention to the environment through the use of low-impact materials.

The success of the adhesion will soon kick off the second edition of the “GeoEvents” initiative.
