The “GeoSchool” environmental education program, now in its third edition, is an initiative aimed at spreading the culture of geodiversity among students, raising awareness among the younger generation about the importance of protecting natural heritage. Part of the wider UNESCO Global Geopark nomination process, “GeoSchool” offers a unique opportunity to explore and understand the geological, natural, historical and cultural peculiarities of the Alta Murgia and Premurge territory.
The program includes a wide range of outdoor educational activities, including guided tours of geosites, field workshops and bike tours, to encourage active discussion among students directly on the ground. The activities aim to help pupils acquire tools for reading and proper understanding of the landscape, developing a critical awareness of the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.
Among the most significant educational destinations, the “GeoSchool” program includes visits to the Arcangelo Scacchi Geomuseum, an educational hub with laboratory spaces and multimedia installations illustrating geodiversity and the life of one of the most distinguished geologists of the 19th century.
“GeoSchool” activities also complement the national strategies of the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security and the Ministry of Education and Merit, aiming to protect biodiversity, combat climate change, and promote energy saving and the use of renewable sources.
The program involves all schools in the fifteen municipalities of the Aspiring Global Geopark; activities are led by the official guides of the Park Authority. This educational effort aims to instill in new generations an awareness of the need for a balanced and sustainable relationship between man and the environment, which is fundamental for the future of our planet.
