The Alta Murgia Escarpment is one of the most extensive, majestic and diversified geosites in the territory of the aspiring Geopark. It extends along the southern edge of the plateau and consists of a series of faults that raise the area higher than surrounding regions. Its formation dates back to the Mesozoic era, in the ancient Tethys Ocean where the old Adria Plate, the almost lost continent, survives.
Along the steep ridge there is an extraordinary biodiversity that lives among the cracks in the rock with endemic and migratory species. Because of the type of landscape, arid and impervious, even humans have had to adapt to survive, creating a unique cultural heritage that includes farms and jazzi.
